ABOUT TSURUYA

“Tsuruya Pottery Store” started as a retailer of products of Urushi and other goods for celebrations after World War II. Today, the store focuses on ceramics. The name “Tsuruya” was chosen for getting good fortune because they handled festive goods. “The typeface on the signboard was probably created by my father. My father enjoyed drawing pictures and making artwork as a hobby. He held his own exhibition but he should have done it only once, but he did it twice. So the second time he was made a fool of the neighborhood...hahaha!” Mr.Ido the second generation says happily. He said the letters on the signboard were initially bright red. It was plastic signs that were up to date at the time, but as the arcades disappeared, they were fading by the sun and became the color like today. It would be interesting to see it when was bright red, however, the current sign is also very charming and atmospheric.
